Camp with the Camels: November 11, 2025

Our next event is CAMP WITH THE CAMELS to kick off our celebrations for the 100th Anniversary of Route 66. This is coming up soon so please register here to save your place. You can camp overnight, or come for the day, Tuesday November 11, 2025. Why camels at our Route 66 celebrations?

In 1857 Lt. Edward Beale, a Naval officer in service of the U.S. Army Corps of Topographical Engineers, was ordered by the War Department to survey over the 35th parallel to build a government- funded wagon road. His secondary orders were to test the feasibility of the use of camels as pack animals in the harsh Southwestern desert. Camels helped create some of what became Route 66.

Come meet some camels at Goffs Schoolhouse and help celebrate the wagon road west in 1857 that became part of Route 66. The original alignment is our service entrance and you can see the broken up roadway just alongside the present day Route 66, aka Goffs Road.

You will learn why camels were superior pack animals, learn the history of Lt. Beale and his trek through the East Mojave, enjoy an evening BBQ under the stars, and a fireside chat with Lt. Beale, and meet some new friends, perhaps of the camel persuasion. This event is open to everyone.
